When excessive moisture accumulates mold growth will often occur. Mold can grow anywhere; on carpet, wood, walls, cabinets, clothing, and even in hard to see places. Hard to see areas can consist of the backside of drywall, inside walls, around pipes, crawlspaces and attics. So what can you do if you are worried about potential mold growth in your home? Preventing
- Moisture control equals mold control
- Fix any leaks as soon as you notice an issue
- Put a plastic barrier over dirt in crawl spaces to prevent ground moisture
- Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove moisture
- Vent your clothes dryer to the outside
- Use dehumidifiers will reduce moisture in the air
- Increase air circulation by using fans and keep doors open between rooms
- Dry water-damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth
Treatment
- Identify the problem
- Get rid of the excess water or moisture
- Fix plumbing or other sources of water
- Absorbent materials such as a rugs or carpet that become moldy may have to be replaced
